GIVI Topcases

By our observation, GIVI probably makes the most popular top cases out there - and with good reason.  Their products are well designed and well built.

A basic GIVI hard luggage system consists of two components: the mounting rack and the luggage case itself.  The mounting rack you get primarily depends on the bike that you have; the luggage case (or "topcase" when mounted on the top of the bike's tail) is largely of your choosing.

Actually, that isn't quite true.  GIVI makes two different varieties of luggage mounting racks.  They started out with the "monokey" system (named because the same key is used to both open the case and take it off the luggage rack) then developed the "Monolock" system later to handle lighter/smaller cases.  (The "Monolock" cases also use one key to both open the box and take it off the luggage rack.)  In general, then, you first decide which luggage case you want - if it's a "Monolock" box, then you get a "Monolock" mount, if it's a "Monokey" case, you get a "Monokey" mount.

Due primarily to limited inventory storage space, we only intend to stock a few GIVI items.  GIVI has a huge selection of products and we should have access to all of them through our supplier.  If you visit GIVI's website (www.giviusa.com or www.givi.it) and find a product you'd like that we don't carry, please let us know!

If you're starting from scratch, you'll need a mounting plate and a topcase.  If you've already got a GIVI mounting plate and just want a new topcase, you can get that too.  You may also want to add an accessory or two.

Monokey vs. Monolock

We get questions about the difference between the Monokey and the Monolock lines.  Here are some basic differences:

bulletGenerally speaking, the Monokey cases can hold more volume than the Monolock cases.  However, within the products that we carry, this is really only evident in "smallest" (E30 - Monolock) and "largest" (E52 and E55- Monokey).  The other 3 cases we carry are pretty close in size, regardless of which product line they come from.
bulletRegardless of size, the Monokey cases (at least the ones we carry) have a carrying capacity of 22 pounds whereas the Monolock cases are only rated at 6.6 pounds.  If you plan to carry substantial weight, you should be considering the Monokey line.
bulletThe Monokey and Monolock cases use different mounting racks; a Monokey case will not work with a Monolock mount and vice-versa.  However, a Monokey rack will support all Monokey cases and a Monolock rack will support all Monolock cases.  Thus, you have options for upgrading (or downgrading) within a product line without purchasing another mount.
bulletThe Monokey cases do not come with a mounting rack; you must purchase one separately.  We try to keep in stock a number of Monokey mounting plates for certain touring-class scooters (see below); if your bike isn't listed, please contact us to see if we can get a mount for your specific bike.
bulletThe Monolock cases do come with a mounting plate that is designed to be used on many bikes that already have a tubular luggage rack.  However, some bikes (notably, many of the touring-class scooters) don't have a suitable mounting rack.  Here again, we try to stock Monolock racks for many of these bikes.  Unless otherwise noted, if you purchase a Monolock case and a Monolock rack, you will end up with an extra "universal" Monolock mounting plate.
