Ride Well... And Well Equipped. |
Step LightingI always thought the term "step lighting" was odd when discussing bikes. What kind of steps are we trying to light anyway? Well, after giving it some thought, I'm guessing that the term "step lighting" comes from the shape of the device. You could, theoretically, stack a number of these together in a staggered formation to build a set of steps. Though these lights are generally used for decorative purposes, they also have their practical use as well. They are designed to light an area that is perpendicular to the surface on which their mounted, so long ago I mounted a step light I bought at a rally (this was long before we started Two Wheel Touring, long before we considered selling Owl Lighting products; to be honest, I no longer recall who manufactured this LED) on the dash of my Silver Wing, almost underneath the handlebar. It is aimed at the trip meter buttons so that I can find those buttons while riding down the road at night. This LED has been wired into a control switch so I can turn it on for a short time while riding, then turn it off so it doesn't cause any distractions. Different manufacturers build step lights differently. Some place the wiring so that it exits the case from the bottom. Owl Lighting designs their step light so the wiring exist the case from the rear. In most cases, this makes installation easier because the LED will remain flush with the surface. Our step lighting is available in 9 different colors, and can be ordered in a black case or chrome case.
Cluster LightingThese lights are available in the same colors as Step Lights. Each "cluster" contains 4 LED lights arranged in a diamond pattern, arranged within an oval case. These LEDs are generally mounted on one surface to light a facing surface. For example, mount them in your wheel well to show off your wheel.
Like the Step Lights, the Cluster Lights can be ordered in a black or chrome case. Also like the Step Lights, the Cluster Lights can be practical as well as decorative. At the same time I had a step light installed on my Silver Wing's dash, I also had a cluster light installed in the right hand glove box. This made it easier to find stuff in there at night.
Bike Lighting KitsLight up your whole bike! These kits include 4 Step Lights, 4 Cluster Lights, a fuse, a fuse holder, wiring, heat shrink tubing, water proof on/off switch, tape/adhesive, zip ties, and installation instructions. Here are some photos of what's possible with these kits: (NOTE - Some of the bikes pictured here have more lights than just those that come with the Bike Lighting Kits)
Windshield Lighting KitsThese kits really make the edges of your windshield shine through. If you've had an image etched into your shield, you'll see that too! Owl Lighting uses a Surface Mounted Technology to place the LEDs on a hidden edge of your windshield. The light is dispersed through the shield and becomes most noticeable at the edges. Windshield lighting kits are available in all the same colors as Step Lights except Berry We've been advised by Owl Lighting that these will not work with tinted shields. To determine if a shield is tinted, place a sheet of white notebook paper partially behind it and partially exposed. If the exposed part of the sheet of paper has a different color than the part behind the shield, the shield is tinted.
